I love Indiana Jones,

and have recently been reading the 9’0s Bantam novels and noticed a surprising LACK of illustrations or fan art based on Indy’s lesser-known adventures. I decided to make a series of relatively simple cartoony depictions of my favorite scenes from each novel. A lot of inspiration for this project came from @adammurphyart on Instagram, who has made an awesome series of mash-up adventures with Indy and Tin-Tin, as well as some original adventures all in a fantastic vintage pulpy style.

Patrick Schoenmaker’s “The Adventures of Indiana Jones” animated concept is also a heavy inspirations here, but with more of a pulp adventure novel feel that Murphy so perfectly evokes than the sharp animated style of Schoenmaker’s stunning concept trailer. Sidenote: give Schoenmaker the IP for an animated series. Please.

These pieces are simple exercise pieces that serve as fun, supplemental visuals to some great (and also not so great) novels about a character that has a very special place in my heart. I’m by no means a pro with my Wacom Intuos tablet (the disconnect between the stylus and what I am drawing is a HUGE rift that I am actively working to close), so I thought this little “challenge” for myself would be a both fun and effective exercise in familiarizing myself with the tool. If even one person sees these and finds enjoyment out of them, sparks them to read one of the novels or re-watch the films, or draw their own interpretations, then my work will have been worth it!
